There’s a lot to say about this movie as Michael Moore tells the tale about the diminished American health care system.  The system, according to Moore, is in dire need of assistance which is crippled by its health insurance companies across the nation.  It seems like you’re no better off being with health care insurance than without; with numerous examples of people being denied by the system.  Why?  Because it’s all about saving money.  But this doesn’t just stop at health care, an intuitive viewer would also realize that the message about saving money would also be true for any other industry which deals with similar claims - like car insurance!

As this is still a one sided view of the health care system in America, Canadians watching this must realize that what Moore is talking about is general health care.  The kind that you’ll receive when you visit a general practitioner.  There are comparisons between the French and British health care system as well as the theory’s behind why theirs is so much better than ours, but, you know, the grass is always greener.  We have to take in all of the facts before concluding that living in France will make us better off because of health care and liberal holidays.  While I cannot say that I have lived in either country, I am very content living in Canada and enjoy every freedom that I have living here.

So where does this movie take us then?  It’s a journey through the lives of people who’s rejected claims keep them in suffering and in bankruptcy.  With Michael Moore style, Moore pushes the limits as he travels to Cuba to seek medical attention for his fellow Americans and helps each individual to a road of recovery.  To go to this extent by taking people to Cuba for health care proves Moore’s point that the Insurance companies just don’t care enough as compared to the ‘enemy’ (Fidel Castro).  The ‘enemy’ doesn’t seem so bad after all!

This was a great film worth watching if not for learning about one perspective about health care over in America but by how privatized health care may one day affect us.  According to Moore, privatized health care only helps the companies and politicians who run it, not the little guy who needs it.  With an aging population who will grow to depend on the health care system, one must wonder what will happen to those who won’t be able to afford it?
